The same bracket sits in five machines. Someone edits it for one customer order, and nobody checks where else it’s used.
A drawing was copied, renamed or emailed, and the weldment was built to the old revision after the new one was released. The laser-cut blanks go to scrap and the machine ships late.

Designs live across shared drives, OneDrive and old project folders, and opening a large assembly over a VPN can take minutes.
The customer comments on a layout PDF, the fabricator queries a hole pattern by email, and nobody can say who approved the change or which revision each of them saw.

On-premises PDM such as SOLIDWORKS PDM or Autodesk Vault typically needs a Windows machine running SQL Server, and remote engineers usually connect over a VPN. That’s a lot of IT for a ten-person engineering team.
Custom integrations are available on the Enterprise plan, so released revisions and file metadata can reach your ERP and MES. BOM management and automatic part numbering are on our roadmap; until then your BOM stays where it is today.
Self-serve APIs and webhooks: coming soon
We use a sample case packer, never customer data, to follow one change to a shared bracket, from production’s request on the model to the released revision your fabricator builds from.
1. Check out the bracket and slot the holes
Production asks for slotted holes because the welded frame on machine 2 is 2 mm out. Your design engineer checks out the bracket, so nobody else can save over it, edits it in SOLIDWORKS from the synced project folder and contributes the change with a note.
2. Review a shared part before anyone signs
Because the bracket is shared across machines, your lead engineer checks the new revision against the released one before signing. CAD diffing highlights only the four slots: the Ø44 bore and hole centres every machine relies on haven’t moved.
Included on Business and Enterprise plans.
3. Sign off with production, then release
Your lead engineer approves the ECO, and the production lead approves from her phone on the shop floor. With both signed, the new revision is released. For ISO 9001, the ECO and audit log record who approved it and when.
Included on Business and Enterprise plans.
4. Share the released bracket with your fabricator
Invite your fabricator as a guest on the released bracket instead of emailing a copy, so hole-pattern queries land on the model. Guests view, measure and comment in the browser on the files you share, and download only if you allow it. Guest viewers are free.
Request a sandbox and we’ll email you an invite to a sample project.
Shared drives or OneDrive
Keep working in folders while CAD ROOMS adds check-out, version history and a release step.
SOLIDWORKS PDM or Vault
Check-out and releases with no Windows server, SQL database or VPN to maintain. BOM management is on our roadmap.
Onshape
Its PDM covers data modelled in Onshape. CAD ROOMS manages your existing SOLIDWORKS, Inventor and STEP files.
Teamcenter or Windchill
Both add BOM, requirements and configuration management. Need version control, review and release first? Start without a PLM project.

ISO 27001 certified and SOC 2 Type II attested, with GDPR-compliant processing. We never use your files, data or metadata to train AI.
Questions machine builders ask us
Can CAD ROOMS replace SOLIDWORKS PDM or Autodesk Vault for a small machine builder?
For day-to-day file control, often yes. You get check-in/check-out, version history with notes, releases and browser review, with no Windows server, SQL database or VPN to maintain. Revision compare and ECO approvals are on Business and Enterprise. There’s no CAD plugin, so data cards and title-block write-back aren’t part of it, and BOM management is on our roadmap.
We already have SOLIDWORKS PDM Standard or Vault Basic with our CAD licences. Why pay for CAD ROOMS?
The licence comes with your CAD; the infrastructure doesn’t. Those editions still need a machine running SQL Server, backups and usually a VPN for remote engineers, and sharing with customers means exporting files. CAD ROOMS Team is $60 per seat per month billed annually, for up to 5 seats, with nothing to host, and guest viewers are free.
Can we keep SOLIDWORKS, Inventor and our suppliers’ STEP files in one place?
Yes. CAD ROOMS works at file-system level through a desktop sync drive, so there’s no CAD plugin and nobody changes CAD. It handles 35+ formats, including SOLIDWORKS, Inventor, Solid Edge, Creo, NX, CATIA, AutoCAD, STEP and IGES, side by side in one project. The full list is in our help centre.
How do we stop a fabricator building from an old revision?
Release each change, after an ECO approval on Business and Enterprise, and share the released files with your fabricator as a guest instead of emailing copies. Guests view, measure and comment in the browser on the files you share. They can’t edit, check out or release files, and can download only if you allow it. Guest viewers are free.
Can our customer review a machine layout before we build it?
Yes. Invite the customer as a guest on the layout or assembly they need. They don’t need a CAD licence or install, and their comments stay next to the file. Guests view, measure and comment in the browser on the files you share. They can’t edit, check out or release files, and can download only if you allow it. Guest viewers are free.
Do our production staff need a paid seat to view released files?
Yes. Everyone inside your company joins as a workspace member, and members use a paid seat, including those with a viewer role who only review or approve. Guests from outside the company, such as fabricators, suppliers and customers, are free and unlimited: they view, measure and comment on the files you share.
Does CAD ROOMS connect to our ERP or MES?
Yes, through a custom integration on the Enterprise plan: released revisions and file metadata can reach your ERP, MES or other production systems. Custom integrations are available on Enterprise today; self-serve APIs and webhooks are coming soon. CAD ROOMS doesn’t manage BOMs yet, so your BOM stays in ERP, CAD BOM tables or a spreadsheet for now. BOM management is on our roadmap.
